Writing My Poems

So many different thoughts

running through my head.

The only time they stop

is when I’m asleep in bed.

Sometimes it gets confusing

and feels like a curse.

Thoughts racing through my head

verse after verse.

Sometimes I ask myself,

“Have I written this before?”

I would hate to become

…a literary bore.

I write about things

 I see and I feel.

I try to relate

by writing what’s real.

I try to write simple

and not be too deep.

If I confuse the reader,

that makes me a creep.

I try not to write

about things too sappy.

If I can make you smile

then we’ll both be happy.

Regrets

Life can become so twisted

in so many different ways.

Sometimes you don’t know

whether to go… or stay.

Before you know it

you realize one day,

much of your hopes and plans

have all gone astray.

In a blink of an eye

without much warning,

The alarm goes off

on your 15,000^th morning.

Some mistakes seem so little

you never think of them twice

but as you get older

you keep paying their price.

Make a mistake now

and pay for it later.

The pain never goes away,

sometimes, it gets greater.

You discover new passions

but sometimes it’s too late…

to turn back the clock…

Whacked Out World

Lately it seems

like the world’s gone bizarre.

Corruption, war, and terrorism,

be it near or far.

All the rules have been broken

and everyone’s going wild.

No one gets married

but they still have a child.

Tattoos and piercings

are the order of the day.

It doesn’t seem to matter

bi, straight or gay.

We celebrate rappers

who sing of sex and crime.

We love watching “talk shows”

and laughing at grime.

Everything changing,

nothing staying the same.

People pretending this and that

like life’s just a game.

When you do something nice

it gets thrown back in your face.

When will people learn

to accept kindness with grace?

What’s that you say?

You don’t agree?

You must see things

differently than me.

Winter Days

Winter days bring us

very limited daylight,

extremely cold weather

with winds that really bite.

After school we spend time

in the kitchen with mom,

doing our homework,

me and twin brother Tom.

When dad gets home

he hugs everyone tight.

We share dinner together,

then a happy, peaceful night.

Dad keeps off the TV

And says, “Let’s read”.

He whispers to mom,

“Attention’s what they need”.

We wake the next morning

to last night’s big snow.

Mom bundles us up

and off we go.

We lay side by side

making angels in the snow.

Then dad pulls our sled

while we both yell, “Go”.

We hang our wet clothes

after a big snowball fight,

then sip hot chocolate

by a warm fire’s light.

We, and the neighbor kids,

make a very noisy group.

Mom had to yell over us,

“Time for sandwiches and soup”.

Chicken noodle soup

and hot grilled cheese.

My mom really knows,

just how to please.
